Bhubaneswar: At a time when Delhi is witnessing worst violence over Citizenship Amendment Act, a man from Odisha has proved that the spirit of inter-faith harmony still remains very much alive in the spirit of India.
Umesh Biswal from Badpal in Pattamundai area of Kendrapara, who has been living in Karawal Nagar since last 25 years extended helping hands to the family of Mohammad Sehman, a victim of the violence in the North-East flanks of the city.

On the night of February 25, some protestors hurled stones at the residence of Sehman, who lives in the same locality, and set ablaze his auto-rickshaw.
As the situation turned ugly, apprehension reached its peak in the mind of Sehman and his family members. But Umesh stepped in as a messiah for the anxious family when he extended helping hands to Sehman without fearing the consequences.
Narrating about the incident, Umesh said, “We Hindu and Muslim were living peacefully with harmony and extending help to one another. As the protestors hurled stones at his house and set ablaze his auto-rickshaw, we protected them and brought them to our house.”
When the city finally returned to normalcy, Sehman expressed his heartfelt thanks to Umesh family for giving them refuge at their most crucial time.
Expressing gratitude towards Umesh, Sehman said, “We fled our house after the protestors threw stones and set ablaze my auto-rickshaw. We were hungry and terrified but he made us feel at home and not only provided us shelter but also took care of us.”
This is not an isolated incident, several also instances of true brotherhood amidst the fire of hate and intolerance have now become the talk of the nation.
During the riots, the protesters destroyed the house of Mehmud Khan, a retired police officer, in Ganga Vihar area but thanks to some Hindu families in the locality, now Mehmud is a happy and secured man.
“After serving in Delhi police for 40 years, I got this reward. My house was destroyed, but no police official came to our house to save us. We would have been dead by now if not for our neighbours,” said a teary-eyed Mehmud.
Choudhury Pritam Singh, a neighbour of Mehmud said, “I chased away the protestors threatening them that if they touched even a hair of Mehmud it would prove to be dangerous for them. I reiterated that since he has been living here for the last 35 years like a brother how can he be a our enemy.”
Meanwhile, Delhi Crime Branch has formed two special investigation teams to probe into the violence which has claimed over 40 lives so far.
On the other hand, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday spoke to the BSF constable Mohammad Anees, whose house was burnt down during the communal violence in Delhi and announced a relief of Rs 10 lakh for Anees from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
